LiftMaster 2220L vs 6580L vs 8165W: Which Opener Is Right for Your NJ Garage?

Last updated:

LiftMaster makes a lot of opener models, but three of them account for the majority of installs we do across Northern NJ: the 2220L, the 6580L, and the 8165W. Each is a solid choice on paper, but they're built for very different homeowners. Here's a real-world comparison based on what we actually install and what holds up over time in Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and the other counties we serve.

Quick Recommendation

If you want the short answer:

  • LiftMaster 2220L – the budget-friendly chain-drive workhorse. Right for detached garages or homes where opener noise isn't a concern.
  • LiftMaster 6580L – the quiet belt-drive standard. Right for attached garages, bedrooms over the garage, and most NJ homeowners.
  • LiftMaster 8165W – the Wi-Fi-enabled smart opener. Right for homeowners who want myQ smartphone control, Security+ 2.0 rolling code, and integration with Amazon, Google, or smart-home dashboards.

If you're not sure which fits your situation, our opener installation team can walk through it with you over the phone in 5 minutes.

LiftMaster 2220L: The Chain-Drive Workhorse

The 2220L is LiftMaster's entry-level Premium Series chain-drive opener. It runs a 1/2 HP AC motor through a metal chain that physically pulls the door open. The chain drive is the oldest mainstream opener design and it's still the most cost-effective.

What you get

  • 1/2 HP AC motor, suitable for most sectional residential doors up to 7 feet tall
  • Steel rail with the chain running inside
  • Standard remote and wall control
  • Security+ 2.0 rolling code (covered in detail in our Security+ 2.0 guide)
  • No Wi-Fi, no myQ, no smart features built in

Strengths

It's tough, simple, and reliable. There are fewer electronics to fail, the chain is easy to inspect and adjust, and parts are universally available. We've serviced 2220L units that are 12+ years old still running fine.

Trade-offs

Chain drives are noisy. The metallic clack of the chain running through the rail is the loudest opener sound you'll hear. If your garage is attached to the house and you have a bedroom directly above it, the 2220L will probably wake people up. If your garage is detached or you don't mind the noise, this opener is hard to beat for the price.

Best for

Detached garages, rental properties, workshops, and homeowners who prioritize reliability and value over quiet operation.

LiftMaster 6580L: The Quiet Belt-Drive Standard

The 6580L is LiftMaster's mid-tier Elite Series belt-drive opener. Instead of a chain, it uses a reinforced rubber belt running inside the same rail. The motor is a DC motor, which is quieter and offers smoother starts and stops than the AC motor in the 2220L.

What you get

  • 3/4 HP DC motor, strong enough for double doors and insulated doors
  • Reinforced steel-belt drive (the rubber is steel-reinforced)
  • Battery backup built in — the door still opens during a power outage
  • Soft-start and soft-stop motion that's gentler on the door hardware
  • Security+ 2.0 rolling code remote
  • Wi-Fi-compatible but requires a separate myQ hub (the 8165W has Wi-Fi built in — see below)

Strengths

The belt drive is genuinely quiet. We've installed 6580L units in Hackensack and Englewood homes where the master bedroom is directly above the garage and the homeowners can barely hear the opener cycle. Soft-start and soft-stop reduce stress on the door and the springs, which means the rest of the system lasts longer too.

Trade-offs

It costs more than the 2220L. The belt itself is also slightly more expensive to replace if it ever wears out (which usually takes 15+ years).

Best for

Attached garages, homes with living space over or adjacent to the garage, families who don't want to wake the house at 6 AM, and anyone replacing a screeching old opener.

LiftMaster 8165W: The Wi-Fi Smart Opener

The 8165W is built around the 6580L's quiet belt-drive platform but adds built-in Wi-Fi and full myQ smart garage compatibility. It's the upgrade pick for homeowners who want their phone to be their garage remote.

What you get

  • 1/2 HP DC motor with belt drive (slightly less HP than the 6580L but more than enough for standard doors)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi — no separate hub needed
  • Full myQ smartphone app integration: open, close, monitor, schedule, and get notified when the door moves
  • Works with Amazon Key Delivery (in-garage delivery), Google Assistant, IFTTT
  • Security+ 2.0 rolling code
  • LED lighting built into the opener for better garage visibility

Strengths

It's the most feature-rich opener LiftMaster makes at its price point. The smart features actually work reliably (we've installed enough of these to know which features hold up). If you've ever been halfway to work wondering if you closed the garage, the myQ app pays for itself the first time it shows you the door status from your phone.

Trade-offs

It's the most expensive of the three. It also relies on Wi-Fi being available in the garage, which can be spotty in detached garages or houses with old routers. If your Wi-Fi signal is weak at the garage, you may need a mesh extender to get reliable myQ performance.

Best for

Smart-home enthusiasts, busy families, homeowners who travel and want to verify the door is closed remotely, and anyone who wants Amazon Key Delivery for in-garage Amazon drop-offs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the LiftMaster 6580L worth the extra cost over the 2220L?

For most NJ homeowners, yes. If your garage is attached to your house, the noise difference alone is worth it. The 6580L's battery backup also lets you open the door during a power outage, which matters during winter storms. The 2220L is the better pick if you have a detached garage and want maximum value.

What is myQ and do I need it?

myQ is LiftMaster's smart garage system. It lets you open, close, and monitor your garage door from a smartphone app, schedule automatic closing times, and integrate with Amazon Key, Google Assistant, and other smart-home tools. You don't need it, but if you've ever forgotten to close the garage, the peace of mind is hard to beat.

Can I add Wi-Fi to a 2220L or 6580L later?

Yes. Both models work with the LiftMaster myQ Smart Garage Hub, which is a small standalone Wi-Fi bridge that connects to non-Wi-Fi LiftMaster openers. The 8165W has Wi-Fi built in, which is cleaner but not strictly necessary.

Will my old remote work with a new LiftMaster opener?

If your old remote was made within roughly the last 15 years and uses Security+ or Security+ 2.0 rolling code, it can usually be reprogrammed to a new opener. Older fixed-code remotes from the 1990s are not compatible with current LiftMaster receivers. Our remote not working guide covers troubleshooting.

How long do LiftMaster openers last?

With proper maintenance, a LiftMaster opener can last 15 to 20 years. The motor, drive components, and electronics are all serviceable - it's rare for the entire unit to fail at once. Periodic tune-ups extend the life of the opener and the door together.
