Broken Spring Replacement (Northern NJ)
A torsion spring replacement and full safety inspection for a homeowner in Paramus, NJ, completed in under two hours.
The Call
A homeowner in Paramus, NJ called us on a weekday morning after hearing a loud bang from the garage the night before. When they tried to open the door the next day, it barely lifted a few inches off the ground and felt extremely heavy. They couldn't get their car out and needed help fast.
What We Found
When our technician arrived, the problem was immediately clear: one of the two torsion springs mounted above the door had snapped cleanly in half. The broken spring had unwound and was hanging loosely on the torsion bar. The second spring was still intact but showed visible signs of wear, surface rust, slight elongation, and fatigue marks near the cone.
The door itself was a standard 16×7 steel insulated panel door, roughly 12 years old. The springs appeared to be original equipment and had likely gone through 15,000+ cycles; well within the typical lifespan for standard-duty torsion springs, but past their prime.
How We Fixed It
We recommended replacing both springs rather than just the broken one. When one spring fails, the other is usually close behind, and replacing both at once saves the homeowner from paying for a second service call in a few months. The customer agreed.
Our technician:
- Secured the door in the closed position and released the remaining spring tension safely
- Removed both old springs and inspected the torsion bar, drums, cables, and bearing plates
- Installed a pair of new high-cycle oil-tempered torsion springs rated for 25,000+ cycles
- Wound the springs to the correct tension using calibrated winding bars
- Lubricated all moving parts, springs, rollers, hinges, and the torsion bar bearings
- Tested the door balance by disconnecting the opener and checking that it held at the halfway point
- Reconnected the opener and tested full open/close travel, force settings, and safety reversal
Time & Result
The entire job; from arrival to cleanup, took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The door now opens smoothly, stays balanced at any point in its travel, and the opener operates without straining. The customer was relieved to have both cars accessible again before lunch.
We also gave them a few maintenance tips: apply white lithium grease to the springs twice a year, avoid using WD-40 on the tracks, and schedule an annual tune-up to catch wear before it becomes a failure.
