Garage door opener repair and sensor alignment in Wayne NJ

The Problem

A customer in Wayne, NJ called us frustrated with a garage door that had been acting up for weeks. The symptoms were inconsistent and confusing: sometimes the door would start closing and then immediately reverse back up. Other times, the wall button worked fine but the remote wouldn't respond at all. Occasionally the opener light would blink but the door wouldn't move. They'd already tried replacing the remote batteries and resetting the opener themselves, but the problems kept coming back.

What We Found

Our technician ran through a systematic diagnosis, checking the opener, sensors, wiring, and door mechanics. Here's what we discovered:

  • Misaligned safety sensors: The two photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the door tracks were out of alignment. One sensor had been bumped, likely by a bike or garbage can; and was tilted slightly downward. When the infrared beam couldn't connect, the opener interpreted it as an obstruction and reversed the door.
  • Frayed sensor wire: The low-voltage wire running from the left sensor back to the opener unit had a section of damaged insulation near the floor, causing an intermittent connection. This explained why the problem came and went, vibration from the door operating would sometimes break and re-establish contact.
  • Worn logic board capacitor: Inside the opener unit (a Chamberlain chain-drive model, roughly 10 years old), one of the capacitors on the logic board was slightly bulging. This was contributing to the intermittent remote signal reception; the receiver circuit wasn't getting consistent power.

The Fix

We addressed all three issues in a single visit:

  • Re-aligned both safety sensors using a level, secured them firmly to the brackets, and verified a solid green LED on both units
  • Replaced the damaged sensor wire run with new 22-gauge bell wire, properly stapled and routed away from foot traffic
  • Replaced the failing capacitor on the logic board; a targeted repair that saved the customer the cost of a whole new opener
  • Reprogrammed the remote and keypad to the opener, confirming reliable response from inside and outside the garage
  • Tested the door through 10+ full open/close cycles to verify consistent, reliable operation
  • Adjusted the close force and travel limits for a clean, smooth stop at both endpoints

Time & Result

The full diagnosis and repair took about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The door now opens and closes reliably every time; no more random reversals, no more dead remote, and no more blinking lights. The customer mentioned they'd been dealing with the issue for over a month and wished they'd called us sooner.

We recommended they schedule an annual maintenance tune-up going forward to catch small issues like sensor drift and wire wear before they become daily frustrations.
